- Creating healthy communities is the key to reversing the obesity epidemic
- It’s time to focus on where health begins, not where it ends.
- Wood County is committed to being one of the healthiest counties in the state.
"Get Active" is a call to action...it asks that every man, woman and child in our county take charge of the health of our community.
"Get Active" is a movement to change our community- a change that challenges us to work together to make healthy eating and active living the easy choice.
"Get Active" starts by giving our community knowledge... information that will help us think about what and where we eat, how we get to work and school, and how we live, work and play. It will help us think about how we can improve the place that we live so healthy choices are easier.
"Get Active" is about creating a better tomorrow for our children and their children.
"Get Active" does not ask for a total transformation, but small changes. If we, as a community, make these small changes, it will be easier for all of us to eat healthier and lead active lifestyles.
Creating healthy communities is the key to reversing the obesity epidemic.
- The conditions where we live, learn, work and play as children have an enormous impact on our health as adults. What surrounds us shapes our health and behavior.
- When people don’t have access to making healthy choices – like buying affordable, healthy food and convenient outlets for being active – their health and quality of life suffer.
- When we improve conditions in our communities for healthy food and active lifestyles, the health of those who live there improves.
- For example, children who are exposed to growing, preparing and eating fruits and vegetables are more likely to eat fresh produce.
- The more time children play outdoors, the more likely they are to be physically active as adults.
It's time to focus on where health begins, not where it ends.
- Health begins by creating conditions ̶ in our neighborhoods, schools and communities ̶ where all residents have access to healthy choices.
- Health begins in neighborhoods with stores that sell healthy food at affordable prices and public spaces for community gardens.
- Health begins with schools that serve fresh, locally grown food and require daily physical activity.
- Health begins with eating establishments and worksite vending machines that identify healthier food options so patrons can make informed choices.
Wood County is committed to being one of the healthiest counties in the state.
- People throughout Wood County are coming together to implement proven strategies to make healthier choices accessible and affordable for all residents. With community support, these strategies can reverse the obesity epidemic and improve health in our communities.
- The strategies include:
- Promoting pricing strategies that make healthier food more affordable.
- Labeling healthier food options in restaurants and vending machines to support more informed choices.
- Increasing the availability of local farm-fresh produce in area schools.
- Creating nutritional guidelines for all foods and beverages sold in schools.
- Supporting childcare centers in planting on-site gardens and buying local produce.
- Increasing physical activity and limiting TV viewing in childcare centers and after-school programs.
- Increasing access to affordable and safe places for physical activity.
Together we CAN do this. It's time for all of us to Get Active and Cause...Community...Change.
