F2S History and Logistics

  • Joined the Wood County Farm to School program in 2010 as one of two pilot schools willing to hold taste tests in District Elementary/Jr. high school.
  • District of 2 schools, 625 students in 2014
  • National school lunch and breakfast programs in every school  


  • In the 2013/2014school year,  Pittsville school district used 3890 pounds of local foods in their school cafeteria ($1118 purchased, $664 donated  value), including melons, apples, potatoes, carrot coins, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, sweetened dried cranberries, shredded cabbage and carrots, whole cranberries, winter squash, pears.
  • Some foods are donated by local community members including: pears, apples, fresh cranberries
  •  High School greenhouse provides fresh greens for cafeteria use.
  • School garden located on neighboring farm provided over 800 pounds of produce (watermelon and winter squash) for cafeteria use 2013
  •  Food Service Director buys fresh local produce at village Farmers’ Market

Classroom education (elementary and secondary) 

  • High school agriculture class grows greens in school greenhouse for cafeteria  2011 to present
  • Local foods class taught at High school level
  • From Plant to Plate class (core curriculum) has 7th graders planting seeds at school garden on neighboring farm and then harvesting them in Sept. as 8th graders.
  • Processing kitchen in Family and Consumer Education classroom.  Students learn about food preservation methods: canning, drying, freezing.  Puts ad in local paper to receive produce donations in Sept. for this purpose.
  • In 2013, the students prepped over 500 pounds of winter squash in the school cafeteria.
  • Aquaponics system in Jr. High science classroom
  • Third to fifth grade classes participated in Farm to School classroom monthly education lessons -  2011 to 2013

Additional programs supporting Farm to School in  Pittsville district

  • Nationally renowned Cranberry Science curriculum taught in High School.  Students give tours of cranberry marshes each October to general public and student groups.

Cooperative agreement with local farmer to reduce school food waste

  • Student led initiative to reduce food waste from school cafeteria in spring of 2013.  Local poultry and cattle farmer started picking up bins of food waste daily and feeding to animals.  Students trained each other in disposal protocol. Continued until freeze up in fall of 2013.
